Rose Hall tours - you’ll never be bored
Today many explorations of MoBay are conducted from a reclining chair -- frothy drink in hand -- on Doctor's Cave Beach. As home of the north-shore airport, Montego Bay, or MoBay, is the first taste most visitors have of the island. It's the second-largest city in Jamaica and has the busiest cruise pier. Travelers from around the world come and go in this bustling community year-round. The name Montego is derived from manteca ("lard" in Spanish). The Spanish first named this Bahía de Manteca, or Lard Bay. Why? The Spanish once shipped hogs from this port city. Jamaican tourism began here in 1924, when the first resort opened at Doctor's Cave Beach so that health-seekers could "take the waters." If you can pull yourself away from the water's edge and brush the sand off your toes, you can find some very interesting colonial sights in the surrounding area. The outstanding free tour of Barnett Estates is led by a charming guide in period costume who recites period poetry and sings period songs. The Kerr-Jarrett family has held the land here for 11 generations, and family members still grow coconuts, mangoes, and sugarcane on 3,000 acres. Granville Main Rd., Montego Bay, Jamaica, PHONE: 876/601-2381; COST: Free, but open only for diners at Day-O Plantation Restaurant, next door; OPEN: Great house 9:30 AM-10 PM; tours daily 6:30 PM-11 PM. In the 1700s Rose Hall may well have been the greatest of greathouses in the West Indies. Today it's popular less for its architecture than for the legend surrounding its second mistress, Annie Palmer. As the story goes, Annie was born in 1802 in England to an English mother and Irish father. When she was 10, her family moved to Haiti, and soon her parents died of yellow fever. Annie was adopted by a Haitian voodoo priestess and soon became skilled in the practice of voodoo. Annie moved to Jamaica, married, and built Rose Hall, an enormous plantation spanning 6,600 acres with more than 2,000 slaves. According to legend, Annie murdered several of her husbands and her slave lovers. To know more about the tales of Rose Hall, read The White Witch of Rose Hall, a novel sold across the island. There's a pub on-site. It's across the highway from the Rose Hall Resort & Country Club. N. Coast Hwy., Montego Bay, Jamaica, PHONE: 876/953-9982; COST: $15; OPEN: Daily 9-6. The Greenwood Great House has no spooky legend to titillate, but it's much better than Rose Hall at evoking life on a sugar plantation. The Barrett family, from whom the English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning descended, once owned all the land from Rose Hall to Falmouth; they built this and several other greathouses on it.
